More About Prof Tim Eglinton:

Tim is a Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon and Head of the Department of Surgery
at the University of Otago, Christchurch.
Tim completed his undergraduate medical training at the Christchurch school of Medicine in
1996. Following this he progressed rapidly through general surgical training to become a
fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) in 2005. He was appointed to
the Cambridge University Hospital, Cambridge, UK as a Fellow in Coloproctology where he
furthered his specialist training in colorectal surgery. Subsequent to that Tim completed a
fellowship in Adelaide at the Royal Adelaide and Queen Elizabeth hospitals where he
specialised in laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery and became a member (and subsequently
fellow) of the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand (CSSANZ).
Tim returned to Christchurch in 2008 where he works as a Consultant Surgeon, with a busy
practice in general and colorectal surgery. He is one of the South Island’s foremost

laparoscopic colorectal surgical specialists and performs minimally invasive (keyhole)
treatment for a wide range of colorectal and abdominal conditions.
As Head of Department at the University of Otago, Christchurch, Tim has a strong interest in
research, with a focus on improving the lives of patients with colorectal cancer, diverticular
disease and inflammatory bowel disease. He has published over 100 papers and text books
on surgical topics. Throughout his training and specialist career Tim has received a number
of distinctions including the CSSANZ Phil Douglas Award, The ACGBPI Fellowship and the
American College of Surgeons International Guest Scholarship. As a result of these awards
he has visited and lectured at prestigious institutions around the world, including Memorial
Sloan Kettering (New York), the John Radcliffe Hospital (Oxford, UK), University College
(Dublin) and St Marks Hospital (London).
As a senior surgical specialist, Tim is also heavily involved in training young surgeons in
Christchurch and across Australasia. He is a past Chairman of the CSSANZ (NZ), a member of
the Australia and New Zealand Training Board in Colon and Rectal Surgery (ANZTBCRS) and
sits on the RACS Surgical Skills Committee.
Tim lives here in Christchurch with his wife of over 20 years, Devonie. Devonie is a clinical
research physician and serves on the MoH Health and Disability Ethics Committee. Devonie
and Tim have three boys and spend their available weekends on the sidelines coaching and
watching cricket, basketball and football; sports in which the boys show far more promise
than their father!
